The principal specialist certifications that qualify pathologists for independent consultant-level practice and are recognized by licensing authorities worldwide.
FRCPath is the gold standard specialist qualification for pathologists in the United Kingdom and one of the most internationally recognized pathology credentials. It is accepted for specialist licensing in the UK (GMC Specialist Register), all six GCC countries, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong and many other jurisdictions.
Part 1 — Written examination testing core knowledge across the chosen discipline. Format: single best answer (SBA) and extended matching questions (EMQ). Typically sat during years 2–3 of specialty training.
Part 2 — Practical and oral examination assessing specialist knowledge, diagnostic competence, critical appraisal and professional judgement. Includes microscopy (histopathology), case-based discussions and a viva voce. Typically sat during years 4–5 of training.
FRCPath holders can practise at consultant level in: United Kingdom, Ireland, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Australia (with RCPA assessment), New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and across the Commonwealth. It is the most commonly held credential among pathologists working in GCC countries.
The American Board of Pathology (ABP) is the certifying body for pathologists in the United States, one of 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Board certification is virtually required for hospital appointment and insurance credentialing in the US.
ABP offers 12 subspecialty certifications after 1–2 year fellowship:
Computer-based examination administered at Pearson VUE centres. AP exam: 300 questions over 2 days including digital microscopy images. CP exam: 200 questions in 1 day. AP/CP combined: 3-day examination. Pass rate: approximately 85–90% for first-time takers.
ABP certification valid for 10 years. MOC requires: continuous professional development (CME credits), self-assessment modules (SAMs), and re-examination or alternative pathway. Annual MOC fee: USD 275.
ABP certification is recognized in the United States, all GCC countries (for specialist licensing), Canada (partial), and most international institutions. Combined with ECFMG certification, it provides broad international credentialing flexibility.
FRCPC in pathology disciplines is the Canadian specialist credential required for independent practice. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) oversees specialist certification in: Anatomical Pathology, General Pathology, Hematological Pathology, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Microbiology and Neuropathology.
Practice-Ready Assessment (PRA) — Available in several provinces for experienced pathologists who may not need to repeat full residency. Typically involves a 12-week supervised practice assessment. Available in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba and Nova Scotia.
Traditional residency — 5-year RCPSC-accredited residency programme via CaRMS Match (Canadian Residency Matching Service).
Certification exam: CAD 4,500–5,500. RCPSC annual fee: CAD 750. FRCPC recognized in Canada, GCC countries, and for reciprocal assessment in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
The principal specialist pathology qualification in Australia and New Zealand. Training pathway of 5–6 years through an RCPA-accredited programme. Disciplines: Anatomical Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Forensic Pathology, General Pathology, Genetic Pathology, Haematology, Immunopathology and Microbiology. Examinations include Part I (basic pathological sciences) and Part II (specialist discipline assessment including practical microscopy). Recognized for specialist registration with AHPRA (Australia) and MCNZ (New Zealand).
Administered by the UEMS Section of Pathology. The European Examination in Pathology provides a voluntary pan-European credential complementing national specialist titles. Format: MCQ paper and slide-based assessment. Recognized as evidence of specialist competence across EU/EEA member states under the framework of Directive 2005/36/EC. Annual examination held during the European Congress of Pathology.
Pan-Arab specialist certification recognized across all Arab League member states. Pathology programme: 4-year structured residency with Part I (basic sciences, year 2) and Part II (specialist exam, year 4) examinations. Disciplines include Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Pathology and Haematology. Recognized by SCFHS (Saudi Arabia), QCHP (Qatar) and licensing authorities across the Gulf and Levant.
National specialist certification administered by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. 5-year residency programme with Saudi Board Part I (year 2) and Part II (year 5) examinations. Available tracks: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Pathology, Haematopathology, Transfusion Medicine, Chemical Pathology and Microbiology. Completion qualifies for consultant-grade licensing across GCC.
Fellowship of the College of Pathologists of South Africa. 4–5 year registrar training programme with Part I (basic sciences and systemic pathology) and Part II (specialist discipline) examinations. Available in Anatomical Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Haematology, Microbiology and Virology. Required for specialist registration with HPCSA.
MD Pathology: 3-year postgraduate degree from NMC-recognized medical colleges (approximately 5,500 seats nationwide). DNB Pathology: 3-year diploma from National Board of Examinations-accredited hospitals. Both qualify for specialist registration. NEET-PG entrance examination required for admission. FMCPath from the Indian College of Pathologists is an additional credential.
Certification through the Japanese Society of Pathology (JSP). 4-year specialist training programme after 2-year initial clinical training. Board examination includes written, practical microscopy and oral components conducted in Japanese. Specialist certification required for consultant appointment at Japanese hospitals. Approximately 2,200 board-certified pathologists in Japan.

Peer-inspection model with over 8,000 accredited laboratories worldwide. CAP also operates the world's largest proficiency testing programme, with surveys covering 600+ analytes and disciplines. Participation is mandatory for CAP-accredited laboratories and accepted by CMS for CLIA compliance.
